Tips and Hints / Finding the Main Shutoff

Flowing water can cause severe damage to your home and its contents. Individual water shutoffs are located under the sinks in the bathrooms and the kitchen. Each toilet has a shutoff valve behind the toilet bowl. Another water shutoff is located on the top of the water heater. It controls the flow of water to the water heater and should be closed in the event of a leak in the water heater.

However, in the event of a plumbing emergency, you must close the main water shutoff at once. To find the main shut-off, look for one or two valves that you can turn on and off by hand near the place where the water main enters your home. Sometimes you'll find it just outside the house near the hose bibb or buried in a cavity sometimes called a "buffalo box." To find it, look for a metal cover in the ground near the street or the edge of your property. Inside there may be a valve that you can turn by hand, or you may need a special long-handled "key." Once your water has been shut off, call a professional at Sun Devil Plumbing to detect and repair the cause of the leak.
