Tips and Hints / Tips for Using Your Garbage Disposal
To avoid maintenance problems, use the following guidelines when using your garbage disposal.
- Turn on a moderate to strong flow of cold water and then turn on the disposal.
- Continue running cold water for 15 seconds after grinding is completed to flush the drain line. Remember the drain line from your sink may run for 30 feet or more before it exits your home.
- Grind hard materials such as small bones, fruit pits, and ice. A scouring action is created by the particles inside the grind chamber.
- Grind up peelings from citrus fruits to remove objectionable odors and freshen up drains.
- Feed vegetable peels into disposal a little at a time instead of all at once. Be sure to turn the water and disposal on first.
- Avoid grinding extremely fibrous materials like corn husks, artichokes, etc., that can cause possible drain blockage.
- Put grease in a jar or can and dispose of it in the trash instead of putting it down your disposal or any drain. It can build up in pipes and cause drain blockages.
- Don't turn off disposal until grinding is completed.
